Genesis Chapter 39 Bible Study – Joseph’s Trials and Faithfulness in Egypt

Joseph Sold into Potiphar’s House (Genesis 39:1-6)

Genesis 39 resumes the story of Joseph after his brothers sold him into Egypt (Genesis 37:36). Joseph is bought by Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard (Genesis 39:1). Despite being a foreign slave, Joseph finds favor with Potiphar because the LORD is with him, blessing everything he does (Genesis 39:2-3).

Potiphar recognizes Joseph’s exceptional qualities and puts him in charge of his household (Genesis 39:4-6). Under Joseph’s management, Potiphar’s estate prospers greatly, showing God’s blessing on Joseph even in difficult circumstances.

Joseph’s Integrity and Temptation (Genesis 39:7-12)

Potiphar’s wife takes notice of Joseph and tries to seduce him repeatedly (Genesis 39:7). Joseph refuses, stating his loyalty to Potiphar and his fear of sinning against God (Genesis 39:8-9).

One day, when no one else is around, she grabs Joseph’s garment and demands he lie with her. Joseph flees, leaving his garment behind (Genesis 39:10-12). This act demonstrates Joseph’s steadfastness and moral courage in the face of temptation.

False Accusation and Imprisonment (Genesis 39:13-20)

Angered by Joseph’s rejection, Potiphar’s wife falsely accuses him of attempting to assault her, showing Joseph’s garment as evidence (Genesis 39:13-15). Potiphar believes his wife’s lie and has Joseph thrown into prison (Genesis 39:16-20).

This unjust punishment highlights the cost of Joseph’s integrity but also sets the stage for God’s further work in his life.

God’s Favor Continues in Prison (Genesis 39:21-23)

Even in prison, the LORD remains with Joseph, showing him mercy and granting him favor with the prison keeper (Genesis 39:21-22). Joseph is put in charge of all the prisoners and is responsible for their care (Genesis 39:22-23).

His success in prison parallels his earlier success in Potiphar’s house, illustrating God’s faithfulness regardless of circumstances.
